About Guernsey

Guernsey is a British crown dependency in the English Channel between England and France - its official name is "Bailiwick of Guernsey", but it is often simply referred to as "Guernsey". Guernsey consists of the Guernsey island itself, as well as several surrounding islands - Alderney, Brecqhou, Burhou, Herm, Jethou, Sark and other islets. Guernsey island is approximately 78 square kilometres in size, and is divided into 10 Parishes. When grouped with Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney are referred to as the "Channel Islands".

The climate is temperate - with the hottest months in August and September (which is generally around 26 degrees Celsius). Conversely, the coldest month is February, where it has actually snowed on several occasions. Saying that, the temperature rarely ever drops below zero. Guernsey's beautiful weather makes it the sunniest place in the UK - and boasts some of glorious sunrises and sunsets all year round, making it an ideal place to work.

Guernsey prints it's own money - the Guernsey Pound, which is pegged equal with the UK Pound for foreign exchange rates. Light tax and death duties make Guernsey a popular tax haven, which explains why banking, fund management and insurance account for 55% of the total income in Guernsey. The tax rates make Guernsey an extremely profitable place to work, as most wages are pegged at a maximum 20% tax rate. That, coupled with the fact that the Guernsey Pound is equivalent to the UK Pound, make working in Guernsey very financially rewarding.

The cost of living in Guernsey is mostly equivalent to the UK - however some items, such as cars, jewellery, appliances, alcohol and cosmetics are generally cheaper than in the UK (due to the lower tax rates).

Population and Language

The population in Guernsey is just over 66,000. English is spoken by the majority of the population, followed by French. Dgèrnésiais, a Norman language specific to Guernsey, is also spoken, but only fluently spoken by 2% of the population - but if you look closely at the welcome messages on the tourism office in the capital St. Peter Port, you will notice that the first greeting is in Dgèrnésiais.

Food is divine in Guernsey, and no less than when it comes to seafood. Being an island, Guernsey boasts fantastic seafood, which can be savoured not only all year round, but especially during the month long seafood festival and fair, held in the island's capital of St. Peter Port each year at the end of June.

Getting there

Travelling to and from Guernsey is by either by plane, or by ferry (see link below for Guernsey Airport). Situated so close to both France and England, Guernsey is ideal as a base from which to travel throughout Europe, or even just for island hopping in the surrounding Channel Islands.
