Guernsey Islands (Channel Islands) Maternity unit has vacancies arising for flexible, enthusiastic midwives committed to providing a high-quality standard of care. All Midwives on Guernsey are appointed on Band 6 or above.

The Guernsey Maternity unit is an innovative and progressive obstetric-led unit, working towards midwifery led-care. The Guernsey Midwifery team provide for all normal and high-risk pregnancies via an integrated service, which actively encourages and supports women's choice. The Guernsey maternity unit has 20 beds comprising four open bays of ante-, post-natal and transitional care, three delivery rooms and five single rooms with en-suite facilities, with a delivery rate of approximately 600 babies per annum. The normal delivery rate in 2004 was 66% and the caesarean section rate was 22%.

This position as a midwife will offer a variety of experience, both in the hospital and community settings, and will involve rotation through all clinical areas and day and night duty. Guernsey has also achieved the Baby-Friendly Initiative award and is working towards its second reassessment; therefore requiring full commitment from all applicants for this position.

The Guernsey maternity unit has a well established clinical risk management committee and is currently working to implement the CNST standards at level 2. All midwives benefit from proactive supervision and a supportive learning environment. The Guernsey maternity unit has a practice-development co-ordinator who facilitates clinical teaching and continuous professional development. All Midwives on Guernsey are appointed on Band 6 or above depending on experience.

A housing licence will be available to those wishing to rent or buy their own property. Alternatively, single subsidised accommodation can be provided. Along with an attractive remuneration and orientation package, you will be given a retention bonus after the first year of £1000.
